First visit after a recent menu change which I think was needed. Excellent place, very well laid out, airy and as expected great character. Not too busy but it did pick up a little around 1pm. Three staff on so we expected pretty quick service but I and a few others did have to visit the bar for more drinks and a long wait time for desserts. Meal options were good but I'd say the dinner menu is better than the lunch for sure. I found the club Sandwich to be a tad on the dry side but luckily sauces are provided at the table. My husband found the shin beef to be tasty and well cooked. Desserts and drinks were the best part for us. Excellent banoffee waffles would highly recommend. Staropramen draft also great. Will be back for the cocktails at dinner time!

Nice place, we loved the decor and showing the history of the building as a fire station. It was match day but we were fine to get in for lunch time. The staff were super friendly and helpful. The food came quickly and was good. I had a fish finger sandwich with chunky fries and my partner had the burger with chunky fries. The only downside of my food was the curry sauce which was just so runny it was like water! However everything else we had was tasty.

Nice little treat out. Food was fantastic, though a word of warning, the shepards pie is HOT but delicious. Only reason I put 4 stars for food was the tinned custard (not that I would complain about that, I like tinned custard) otherwise everything was great. Would definitely recommend a visit.

We booked a table for 11.45, which we did not really need to do, for such an early time. But it is highly recommended to do so if you are going to see a show at the empire, which is about 1 to 2 minutes' walk. The service was really warm and friendly. We both had the fish and chips that came with mushy peas and a small jug of curry sauce and small pot of tartar sauce. The chips were good, as were the peas and curry sauce, I did not try the tartar sauce. I thought the fish was very nice with a light and crispy batter. The only thing that spoilt the fish was, on a personal note, that too much salt had been put on top of it in the kitchen.

A great way to start my stay here in Sunderland. The Sunday roast with pudding was exactly what was needed after moving here. The service was perfect and I highly recommend anyone to come here and eat and enjoy a Sunday.

An exciting aspect of The Engine Room is its adaptability to the vibrant local scene. Positioned conveniently close to the Empire Theatre, it serves as an ideal spot for pre-show dinners. The dish selections are noteworthy as well. The club sandwich, while delicious, was observed to be on the drier side, but with an array of sauces available at the table, it was easy to remedy. The shin beef received rave reviews for its flavor and tenderness, demonstrating the kitchen’s skill in crafting enjoyable dishes. Another favorite, the fish and chips, was noted for its crispy batter, though it suffered slightly from being over-salted, according to one patron. Each meal is thoughtfully prepared, and the comforting nature of British classics shines through in their dishes.

As for libations, the selection of drinks—including a popular Staropramen draft—enhances the dining experience, making it a perfect place to unwind.
